Because it is good for your spine, especially when trying to sleep on your side. Try it once without a pillow. I guarantee that your hands will try to make a natural pillow for your head. :p

If you lay on your side, you head would hang down sideways without a pillow.
But on your back, I don't see why it would matter.

Depends. Wooden pillows hundreds of years ago I wouldn't necessarily consider as comfortable.

The pillow provides something ridiculous like 20% of your back support. If you sleep on a really good bed and your back starts to hurt it's probably because you have an old pillow. Most people keep their pillows until they're flat but you're supposed to get a new one long before then. They say a pillow will last 6 months to about a year and a half or so. That's not taking into account mites and other gross things.

If you aren't sure why you need a pillow then you probably aren't sure why you need a good bed or shoes either.

You don't want a bed that sags but isn't as hard as a rock, so you make a compromise. It's like a car's suspension, you want the car to handle the road as best as possible but you don't want it to be too hard or it will fly or too soft otherwise it won't 'behave' properly so you make a compromise. The only time I see a pillow beneficial is when I'm on my side (as a poster listed above), the problem is, when ever I let my face touch anything like a pillow, I'll develop acne on what ever portion of my face touched the pillow which is quite frustrating at night.

I use a memory foam pillow. Hopefully, It'll be a bit more obvious when it starts "going bad" so I can replace it in a timely fashion.

But, but, but... What if she did?!?!

You people talking about keeping your spine in line must be side sleepers. I'm a back sleeper, use no pillow, and my spine lies perfectly straight.

Thats what I was thinking!!! How do you keep your spine aligned if your sleeping on your back!?!?!?! It would only make sense if you're sleeping on your side.
