Why do we put up with those 2 annoying lines on Trinitron monitors?

I am at a loss on how to explain how so many people here heartily recommend Trinitron-based monitors.
People on this board are very picky and critical of the smallest things, but when it comes to those 2 annoying lines, the AG apologists come up with the lame excuse "You won't even notice them after awhile". I've been using an Iiyama every day now for 6 months now and I STILL NOTICE THEM. My old Viewsonic P775 (which I gave to my girlfriend) is a better monitor even though it is SM. C'mon people - we need to demand a better monitor! Don't tell me there's no way for Sony (or Mitsubishi) to make a nice, bright tube without a couple of stupid wires to keep the AG in place! Ridiculous!

Surely, I can't be the only one here who feels this way about those idiotic lines. THERE IS NO WAY THAT WE SHOULD ACCEPT THIS TECHNOLOGICAL FLAW WHEN WE DEMAND SO MUCH OUT OF OUR OTHER COMPONENTS!

Thanks for letting me vent :disgust:

I agree, Pauli. This is the main reason that I'll NEVER buy a Tritron monitor.

Shees, even one dead pixel is already annoying, so why accepting two lines across the screen?!?

just my $0.02

When people say they don't notice them, they mean it. I've had mine for 7 months now and I seriously only notice them when people like you mention them.

Hey Pauli, I guess it's just a personal thing like they say. Personally, I never notice them doing normal things, only when I look for them. The only time I notice them really is when surfing Anand's or other pages with white backgrounds. Monitors are a subjective kind of thing, so take what I say with a grain of salt.

It's a lot of fun bringing them to the attention of nit-pickey people who never noticed them before just to see them become annoyed from then on with their "perfect" monitor.

Sheesh. It is a trade-off as with most stuff. In exchange for lines noticeable on a light background you get a superior picture and flat screen. For me it is worth it. So neeyah!

I agree totally with what Zeeliv said. I've had a trinitron monitor for around four months and I seriously do not notice the lines. They are incredibly faint, and if I look hard, I can see them...but that's not what I use my monitor for. I'd rather have the two lines than a curvey screen. :)

I never liked them either. But my next monitor will be a 700/900NF, maybe.. depending on money situation... but why? Because the color is absolutely amazing. My roommate has a 700nf, his background is a shot of santa monica w/ a canon a50. Well, it sure as hell looks better than my CTX VL700!!!

The only problem I still have is I tend to use word/this board a lot and well, I do notice them all the time. I used one at school a lot. Granted it's not normal 7 month usuage or anything, but it is always noticeble when i switch into a light backgrounded app. Which is probably why I'm not jumping up to get one now, as this CTX works for me, for now (and that I'm broke, but that's beside the point :)).

I bought an Iiyama monitor last year, plugged it in look at it in widows, unplugged it and took it back to the shop. That was the 450pro 19" aswell the lines were VERY visable. I have now got a 17" ADI MicroScan with a trinitron tube and you con barely see the line if you look hard enough for them. The monitors are very good though and i agree with Zeeliv and Snow Patrol, you don't notice them after a while.

I think the degree which the lines are noticeable varies between monitor to monitor.

Hey Pillage2001, just go to your local CompUsa, Best Buy, or whatever is nearby and take a look at some of the sony(trinitron) monitors. If you determine that the lines don't bother you then go ahead and order a trinitron. If the lines are very noticable from the disply monitors then try a different brand/type of screen.

Hehehe, they don't bother me either. My Mitsubishi Diamond Plus 91 kicks ass, I won't ever get a shadow mask. :p

I have to really look for them on my KDS AV7T and that when working w/productivity apps.

Otherwise, I don't see them partially b/c I have a black background w/equally-blended wallpaper w/black background.

That's the drawback w/AG monitors. I knew what I was getting when I bought one, so it doesn't bother me.

I also a SM monitor from Princeton (EO50) w/c I use on my gaming rig.

Better monitors seem to hide the lines better. I only see them when I look for them on my ViewSonic V75F, and even on the rare occasions when I do notice the lines they are still much less distracting than the glare reflected off of monitors without flat screens. I should mention that I almost always have my monitor at the lowest brightness setting (I don't like needing sunglasses to use my computer) which may diminish the appearance of the lines for me. Chalk it up to personal preferance, I notice the lines in a Trinitron about as often as I notice my eyeglass frames, which is to say about once every six months.

I have a 15" trinitron monitor and I don't notice the two faint lines unless I display a white word processing page and then look for them. This monitor is the best I've ever worked with. For only 15" I can run at high enough resolutions to cram more than most people do on their 19" monitors. The flat screen is great and a 75Hz refresh rate is fine.

I can't believe the stupidity of this thread. I look on it as the sign of a weak mind to keep on noticing those two grey lines on a white page. If it was raining outside would you pay it attention it all the time it continued?- of course not, if you did there would be something wrong with your brain. Call it psychology.
Smart people know that the resolution and contrast of trinitrons is superior. Dumb kids who don't do serious work with computers probably just want a big screen and don't know better.

Just because most of the people in this thread don't like the lines it doesn't make them stupid. I never used an AG monitor until this 900NF so I wasn't sure what to expect of the lines but they don't bother me at all. I DO notice them on the white background of this page but hardly and it doesn't bother me. Everyone sees monitors differently and it's a personal preference. Besides, good quality shadow masks have excellent text quality which might appeal to one who uses his/her computer for word processing instead of graphics, games, etc...

The lines are there because there are wires that support the tube.

If you buy an Aperature Grill (Trinitron based), regardless of brand, you WILL have lines. If you don't like that, maybe you should consider an Invar Shadow Mask tube. I like my Hitachi 751, although I'm sure there are newer, better monitors out now. :)

I've had my 700NF for about a month and haven't noticed the lines unless I really look for them. They're barely visible to me at all.

zenmervolt: you're probably right that there are large variances on the noticability of the lines - I'm just pissed that I didn't return mine when I had the chance because on my Iiyama, they are pretty noticeable.

Rigoletto: well, you're not the first to accuse me of having a weak mind;) I agree that the resolution and contrast of trinnies is superior. Maybe if I had a monitor that the manufacturer did a better job on minimizing the line shadow, I wouldn't be complaining here.

I guess what I'm really frustrated about is that the picture on trinny's IS great - except for those stinkin' lines. It's too bad that we have to make this compromise. Hopefully, one day soon, we can have the great picture quality of the trinny WITHOUT the lines. Then we can all look back at the "old" trinnies as quaint relics of the past.

What amazes me is that mainstream monitor reviews don't normally mention the dampening lines. I first heard of them here at AT. Since I'm terribly sensitive to crap like that I'm avoiding AG tubes until some mfgr. makes a "line free" flat screen. And, nope, I've never bothered to check an actual AG monitor to see if they'd bother me. Ignorance is bliss! (I'm trying to avoid noticing the "great color" of AG tubes because I'd probably want one then.)

SM tubes keep getting better. So I'm gonna keep buying them! :)

So, I suppose it's all in the mind where you actually think that you're seeing it when you're not? So if I don't look hard onto it and look into the monitor like I always use to I won't be bothered by it?

Would anybody recommend the AV7TF for 199bucks?? It's on sale down at Bestbuy. I want a Trinitron tube as the detail is very amazing.
