I think there was a thread about this awhile back but I have to agree. Insects aren't really any different then eating lobster. I'm not sure any society really eats them though, at least not in great numbers. Maybe they end up being around the same amount of work to feed as a chicken...but I have to say I find that hard to believe. Obviously my first thought is "fucking gross" but I can't logically think of a reason they aren't consumed more, especially in poor countries.
The cultural idea that insects aren't edible kind of sucks...I can't get motivated to buy a hissing cockroach and see what it tastes like.
Or a giant weta, though getting one of them would likely be difficult.

Lies. They are juicy, tender, with delightfully crispy and flavorful skin. How the cooks on these shores manage to make them into the dry toughened lumps that they do is a wonder to me.

They are eaten in a lot of countries, but many aren't easy to hunt. Swarms of locusts can be used to get lots at the same time, but many insects don't travel in such swarms. Larvae, some ants and some other insects are on the menu of a lot of people all over the world.
Try googling for 'insect candy', you can probably order some near you too ;)
