Why do we need the military if we have "the bomb"?

I was watching an air show today. It actually brought up a very strong emotional response that I was not prepared for. Here are these clowns, flying around, when they could be falling out of the air and killing someone. I was literally fearing for my life in several instances as they swooped down about 20m above ground level in formation going at least 300mph upside down. Try it with a baby. You've got to cover their ears so they don't go deaf.

Then there's the fact that our governments spend $billions to develop these aircraft, while millions of people go hungry and don't have a roof over their heads.

We have the bomb. Why do we need these punks?

Locked because the OP is either trolling, else just plain retarded. Trolling - calling our military personnel "clowns" and "punks". But, the entire premise of this thread is retarded, as is "Do you not think that the nukes dropped on Japan in WW2 were out of desperation? In a sense it was either do it or let Hitler win. You need to learn your own nation's history." (or is that trolling?) And, "BTW Saddam Hussein also wound up "dead" in a hole in the ground." (in case the OP looks back, he was found in the hole, he was executed by hanging.) Of course the OP can argue he meant a grave  One way or another, this thread is a joke. -Anandtech Moderator DrPizza

Why do we spank a child for be naughty when we can just blow it's brains out? Sometimes, the nuclear option isn't really relevant.

BTW there was a plane there today that accelerated at a 90 degree vertical faster than anything I've seen save for a rocket.

I'm saying that they should be used as a strict deterrent. In Israel, this was not an option. Had it been, my guess is that a nuclear bomb would have been dropped a long time ago.

Think about it - it really does render the rest of the military irrelevant to a large extent.

What's Bin Laden gonna do, go Mach 10 in some jet and they need these pukes to track him down? Give me a break.

That comes in really handy when you need to fly into an alien crafts primary weapon system.

Just for clarification...you went to an airshow and were shocked to see planes flying over your head at low altitudes, that the planes were fast, and that the planes were noisy? And you brought an infant to the airshow?

Point of reference: I went to the Oshkosh airshow back in the '80s and saw a Harrier jump jet. It still stands as the loudest noise I have ever heard in my life.

im not sure you should be talking about tunnel vision when you cant see why we would need a standing army. IF you really think just the fact we have the bomb is keeping anyone from attackign us you are insane.

sad fact is we do need a standing army. Even if we pulled out of every country we have them in. we would still need them.

Louder than a B-1 with full afterburn takeoff? I thought my chest was gonna explode. Maybe I was too close

What do you think the Cold War with Russia was? World War 3 happened in Asia while we were worrying about them nuking us. :light:

*edit* It happened in South America as well.

Let me get this straight. You go to an air show knowing the risks and come back calling these men and women who risk their lives for you clowns and punks? You are one disgusting human being.

Actually I went to an island for the day and the air show was on by chance. I feel sorry for the residents there; I'm pretty sure the show is on for two weeks.

not to bright are you? you seem to be missing the point. IF you think the fact that just having the ability to nuke is keeping people from attacking us you are neive.

while it is stopping many other country's from launching such thing sat us it is not stopping them from attack.

the fact that the Navy would sink the majority of the ships BEFORE they hit mainland, the fact that we have a huge military and many citizens that would fight etc is.

Do you not think that the nukes dropped on Japan in WW2 were out of desperation? In a sense it was either do it or let Hitler win. You need to learn your own nation's history.

I think we can wrap up this thread right here.

Edit: Oh what the hell. Could you tell us what Hitler's reaction to us nuking Japan was?

If it came right down to it, the US would nuke the world to oblivion and leave only them on the map if it came down to a strict choice of survival. I realize that black and white thinking is dangerous; I suppose I am playing devil's advocate to an extent. I am the antithesis to the war mongers. There is nothing I can do about it. For some reason it hits a deep root within me ethically. "Thou shalt not kill" resonates with me I guess. I cringe when I see homeless people starving as well.

Freedom unrequited and unlimited greed both lead to sin.

Just like my Cuba thread, right? My views don't co-inside so I should STFU. Stay in your long-ass tunnel and just keep driving.

In response to your edit, we owe Russia and China an enormous debt of gratitude for what they did for the world.

Um.. what alternate reality did you just come from? No amount of tequila can numb me to the stupidest thing I've heard in a long long time.

You do realize that in our timeline that Hitler was already defeated when we dropped the Abombs on Japan?

JediYoda, I would love to see Israel prove me otherwise. According to their former ambassador's daughter, the rift runs so deep that she doubts it will ever be able to be overcome.
