Why do we need a blanket to sleep?

It seems there's really no point in where room temperature is warm enough where one can sleep without a blanket. If it's too warm to drape a blanket around you, it's too warm to sleep, period.

Why is it so difficult to sleep without a cover of some sort?

With such a lame post, I think you need to get some sleep. . .with or without a blanket. The choice is your's.

It helps us feel secure.

Just like snakes will only sleep when they can feel a wall of some kind all around them.

It's a good question, actually... I'm not entirely sure...

Do people in tropical climates sleep with blankets?

When I was in Vietnam and it'd be 80+ and humid as hell outside I found everyone had blankets. I had a blanket and two fans blasting at me..which creates a paradox of sorts. I needed to be cool from the fans, but needed the blanket to sleep.

It's kind of like turning the heater on on a cold night but leaving a window open in some regards.

Yes, endothermic ones. 🙂

That is a good explanation..Also explains why girls like are such cuddly sleepers, they're generally less secure and need a guy to hold while sleeping..

When you sleep, your breathing and heart rate both slow down. Your body's circulation slows (lowering body temperature). A lesser volume of blood is pumped to your extremeties. The same thing that happens when you go from the hot tub to the pool, your body keeps more blood closer to the center of your body (think 3D).

Essentially, people normally cool down during sleep.

I don't believe I've ever given this to Nik but there's a first for everything,

Aside from the temperature aspect, a lot of it is just behavioral conditioning. We "need" the blanket because we're so used to having it. I can and do sleep without one if it gets warm enough.
