Why do we have foods that are flavored to taste like other foods?

For example:

A few nights ago my wife got birthday cake flavored ice cream. As advertised, it tasted exactly like birthday cake. Why not just eat birthday cake instead?

Maybe next time you should eat some vanillas instead of having vanilla ice cream

taste is only a component of food. You also have smell, texture and temperature. It may have had a taste like cake, but the texture and temperature were much different giving you a different overall feeling when eating it.

Because items without taste we find tastes for. Think about it, what does ice cream taste like? Always something else...

Cost is also a factor. Extracting "imitation vanilla" from wood by-products is a hell of a lot cheaper than growing a vanilla orchid, hand pollinating it, waiting for the fruit to develop, picking, fermenting, storing and shipping it to you.

They tried that with gum right?

A full course meal in a stick of gum but something happens with the blueberry pie dessert and makes the person blow up and turn blue. ;)

Ice cream has no original flavor associated with it. It only has texture, temperature...it then needs a flavor added.

When you chew gum, maybe like a strawberry flavored gum, why don't you just eat strawberries? Gum has no original taste, thus you need to add to it.

Now take chicken, chicken has a natural flavor to it, so if you made chicken taste like candy, then that would be a "WTF?".

It taste like sweetened dairy. It's made out of cream and sugar. That's like saying milk has no flavor.
