Why do we drive on the left side while the rest of the world drives on the right?

From what I have heard, most non-western countries are on the "drive wherever the hell you want" system.

I don't know where you live, but I drive on the right side of the road.

I think he means the left side of the car, like the drivers seat is on the left.

I'm guessing it was because we were the first nation to popularize the automobile, and establish that as a standard here. No one else followed.

yeah, its not really "the rest of the world" just some other Biggies. i find it strange becuase, in countries where it is different from ours (im thinking of england) i kept hearing stories about how hard it was for people who were raised there to remember which way to look while stepping off the curb...they kept running PSA announcements for children to get them to look about 7 times before stepping into the street.

Yeah. The standard IS left hand drive. Britain and its former colonies, and Japan, are the deviants. I don't know if I would like shifting gears with my left hand. Seems more logical and intuitive to have the car's center of mass on your right if you are right handed, which most people happen to be.

I have driven on both sides of the road. It all feels the same.

Yup... its more natural to use the right hand on the stick.
