Why do we clap AT ALL?

It seems so primitive. Someone slapping their hands together to make noise thus showing appreciation for another person. What would the aliens think if they saw this?

Well, obviously if you liked a play or something you can't go up to the profomer's after and offer them dinner or something to show your appreciation. Basicly it is a cultural norm of showing appreciation. It is the most you can do under normal cercumstances to show your appreciation. It is like voting. Obvously one vote won't decide an election, but it is all you can do to ultimitally help your candidate.

Probibly didn't make any sence.

cause its more socially acceptable than ...say....whipping it out and starting to beat off whenever u find something enjoyable?

I'm gonna need a visual.

Because it would even look worse if we all jumped up and down repeatedley to show our appreciation😛

Why not just raise a leg in the air or something?

We needed a way to express appreciation at a distance. Clapping is good because it isn't just line-of sight, and the effect is cumulative so more people=louder=more appreciation.
