Why do we care about our age?

Why do we as humans bother to even record our birthdays? Why can't we just live until we die? Why do we have an obsession with how long we live? I'd rather just live until I died and not really care about what "age" I made it to and instead, focus on just living.

Why do humans give such an importance to a number?
