Why do vehicle insurance companies get away with charging men higher rates?

Statistics are b.s. There are a lot of statistics out there, but in few places are you as discriminated against as for being under 25 and male in America. Why is this even legal? Shouldnt it be done on a case by case basis?

it's both. Insurance companies use statistics to set a premium for you based on a lot of factors other than your gender (age, location, type of car driven, safety features in the car, use for car, etc. etc.). If you prove that you're a good driver (by not getting traffic tickets or accidents on your record), then your premium goes down. So it's stats first, then on a case-by-case basis as you continue to be insured.

because men under the age of 25 get in a fsckload more accidents than anyone else.

what is really retarded tho, is that, when i was 24 and had been driving 8 years, my sister, 23 and driving for all of 3 months (she never had occasion to need a car before) paid lower rates than me. when i turned 25 i suddenly became 'as good' a driver as her. WTF.

Yeah, I hate that part.

And IIRC, women under the age of 25 get in more accidents than any other demographic, men under 25 get in worse accidents than any other demographic. This is of course followed by elderly of both genders.

its even better if you live in a no fault state like i do.

Some jerk hits me.....ok....my rates go up
I hit someone......ok...my rates go up

why do i have insurance again?

STFU
statistic NEVER lies.

edit: typo

Yet women want parity on hair cuts...

Something to notice about men vs. women drivers:
If there's a guy and a girl in a car, who is usually driving?

I have been in two accidents, both caused by women. My sister was in a accident, a woman's fault. Her husband as well, a woman's fault. And my mom, she was hit by a woman as well. Insurance companies charge what they do because they can. And you have to have insurance to drive.

I got rear-ended by a guy once, but other than that, I've had one serious accident where someone pulled out in front of me. Woman driver, mid-to-late fifties.
Near misses: six or so. All women drivers. All looking straight at me and then making as if to pull out. Slam on breaks, hit horn, swear, drive off.

Statistically there probably weren't as many women on the road back in the 1980s compare to now, so the insurance companies should re-evaluate their data for the past 20 yrs or so. Nowadays I have seen several soccer moms driving dangerously with their SUV/mini-van. :disgust:

I've only been in one accident - where some guy rear-ended me and totalled the damn car. Good thing Texas isn't a no-fault state (which seems to be the dumbest idea I've ever heard of).

Although insurance prices are still not all that cheap....I'm probably going to buy a new car this week (since that accident was a month ago and I've been carless since then), and it looks like I'll be paying roughly $1000-$1200 for insurance each year. With that money, I could buy a new (to me) car every two or three years....It feels like I'm just pissing money away with no return at all. Well, actually, I guess that's what I am doing. :frown:

1) Men get in fewer accidents per capita, but when we do they tend to be at higher speeds and more damaging, so that probably roughly balances out. We also drive more.

2) Women slide on a lot of accidents and tickets, whether they sweet-talk some poor schmuck into not calling his insurance company, a cop into not giving them a ticket, or (very common) they hit parked cars. They're at fault 99% of the time in that last case, but the insurance companies see that as "undetermined" since the person reporting the damage doesn't have proof, and it doesn't figure into their rates.

And what car did you have vs the car she had?
If you had a "boy-racer" car, and she had a sensible little car, obviously she's going to have lower rates, and with gender factored in, it's going to be an even bigger difference.

It still sucks, but if she has a smaller car then that accounts for a part of the difference.

I'm all for it, it a statistics/risk management system.

I also think health insurance should cost more for fat people.

Because they make more money in general, and insurance companies are all about screwing people out of their money.
