I personally believe that U.S. Americans are unable to do so because, uh, some people out there in our nation don?t have maps and uh, I believe that our, uh, education like such as uh, South Africa, and uh, the Iraq, everywhere like such as. And I believe that they should, uh, our education over here! In the U.S. should help the U.S., or, should help South Africa, it should help the Iraq and the Asian countries so we will be able to build up our future, for our children.

Also, it makes you look stupid, because the United States of America is the name of your country and America is the name of the continent, it almost sounds like you don't know basic geography.

Wrong, you ignoramus. . .the name of the continent is "North America." And the other one is "South America." Now what was it you were saying about not knowing basic geography? The United States of America is the only COUNTRY on the NORTH AMERICAN OR SOUTH AMERICAN continents that has the word "America" as the name of it's country. This happens to coincide with the word "America" in the name of the continent "North America." When we say we are "American" we are referring to the name of our country, NOT the name of the continent upon which our country is founded. Thanks for playing. You lose. You fail. Do not pass go, do not collect $200.

Don't know a single Canadian that I've met in my 28 years on this planet who cares about this.

Dear super annoyed OP,

In case you haven't noticed, "America" is much like a shortened version of United States of America. We call this pattern of speech abbreviation. It's quite common. Take a deep breath. Also, have you not heard that people from Europe *are* called Europeans, and those with heritage from China, Japan, Korea, etc. are called Asians? You are getting too caught up in a detail, look at the larger picture. Even the BBC, a respected **non-American** media source calls this area part of "the AmericaS"-- see how that's plural there? In case this isn't enough, and you still think our teachers are stupid and lacking -- please refer to the commonly accepted FACT that there are 7 Continents -- among which are NORTH America, and SOUTH America. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Continent Go ahead, see for yourself.

Thanks for playing...

Very entertaining thread. I am, however, dissapointed in the lack of OP participation

I love how foreigners think Americans are the only ignorant/arrogant people. Here's a taste of what Brazilians do:

1) Brazilians call any white skinned/blue eyed person an "Alemão" which literally means "German", yet at the same time, they ALWAYS assume you are American. Walking down the streets in Brazil I would hear this at least a dozen times a day "Oi Alemão, voce e Americano?" (Hey German, are you American?). Occasionally I would respond "Hey Mexican, are you Brazilian?" This would take them by complete shock and they would think I was the dumbest person ever, then I would say "Oh you called me Alemão because of my white skin? I called you Mexican because of your brown skin."

2) Occasionally I would hear from the America hating Brazilians bring up the stupid "we are all Americans" arguments. No you're not, You are Brazilian. I would always tell people I was from the "United States" but I guess they were all stupid enough to assume I meant the United States of America and not the Mexican United States.

People who bitch about this stuff think they are so wise and a step ahead of the curve when in reality they belong in the retard club.

This.

I know the historical reasons for that, but i don't understand why nobody has made any efforts to change this. I still see your media calling USA citizens "Americans" and calling the USA "America". I also haven't seen anyone doing differently. Can't you see that it makes your people look arrogant and egocentric, specially to other Americans? Also, it makes you look stupid, because the United States of America is the name of your country and America is the name of the continent, it almost sounds like you don't know basic geography.

It is the same as it would be referring to French people as Europeans, or Japanese people Asians, or Egyptian people Africans. There are over 35 countries in America, do you think they like that whenever someone says "American" people immediately think of the USA? It is extremely offensive and makes it sound like the USA is the only relevant country in the continent.
