Why do USA citizens call themselves 'Americans'?

I know the historical reasons for that, but i don't understand why nobody has made any efforts to change this. I still see your media calling USA citizens "Americans" and calling the USA "America". I also haven't seen anyone doing differently. Can't you see that it makes your people look arrogant and egocentric, specially to other Americans? Also, it makes you look stupid, because the United States of America is the name of your country and America is the name of the continent, it almost sounds like you don't know basic geography.

It is the same as it would be referring to French people as Europeans, or Japanese people Asians, or Egyptian people Africans. There are over 35 countries in America, do you think they like that whenever someone says "American" people immediately think of the USA? It is extremely offensive and makes it sound like the USA is the only relevant country in the continent.

Well, there's more than one continent with the name "America."

My best solution is for you to unstuck the rocket lodged up your gaping asshole.

i believe The United States of America is the only country in the Americas that actually has America in the name. If Canada was named The Canadian Provinces of America then it may be confusing, but it isn't, so why are your panties in a bunch over this?

Oh, and P&N is that way

Out of curiosity, what would you call us instead?
United States of Americans?

Who cares? Why would anyone worry about such small stuff?

Signed,

United States of AMERICA

The rest of the world calls us Americans, we probably picked up the habit from them.

I still see your media calling USA citizens "Americans"
Ew, you watch American media? It's pretty horrible isn't it? I've been getting most of my news from the BBC for years now. Aside from their sizeable pro-islam bias, they're quite good.

Being naturally superior, I think we Canadians should start calling ourselves "Earthlings".

This will naturally escalate to Europeans calling themselves "Solians", then Asians "Milky Wayans", then Aussies "Universans".

So I take back my original suggestion, because such an escalation can lead to no good. Let the US call themselves "Americans", I don't care.

Wait, you think "America" is a continent? I think you're the stupid one. There's North America, South America, and "the Americas" (referring to both at once). "America" by itself is generally regarded as being synonymous with the United States, much like "Britain" is essentially the same as the United Kingdom (I know it's not exactly the same, but close enough).

Actually, in other countries they teach you that "America" is the name of the entire continent. In fact, I think they teach you that in every single country except in the USA.

Which one? North America or South America? They are two distinct continents, as separate as Asia and Africa. If they teach it that way, they are wrong.

I can sort of see treating Europe and Asia as being part of the same continent geographically (Eurasia), but they're culturally and politically very separate and that's a good enough reason to separate them. There is no argument you can make for North and South America to be considered a single continent.

USA was the first sovereign nation in the Americas. It was a collection of states in the region known as the Americas. With the name established, doesnt make much sense to change it just to appease others.

As separate as Europe and Asia, even. Oh wait...

Somebody back me up: They do teach you that America is one continent, divided into 3 regions: North, Central, and South America.
