I was thinking about getting a new video card and then I thought was I upgrading beacuse I needed to or wanted too.
I noticed that o many people talking about FPS but after a certain point can you really tell how fast your video card is or is it something that we just like to say they we have the fastest video card out there.

Want.

My last upgrade was from 6800gt to 7800gtx which wasn't needed but turned out to be a superb decision. Expensive though.

When it can no longer run modern games at acceptable detail levels... Or when your Geforce 3 has buggy firmware(finally fixed that about 4 months after I stopped using it, rest in hell you evil card, glad someone steals prototype firmwares :))
I usually just upgrade my whole computer at a time after a few years, though I do make some exceptions. Anyways I am never buying first generation hardware again.

Last upgrade was a 9600SE to a 9800 Pro... and I still can run most games at acceptable levels with that card.

Most people upgrades not because of need but want. But then there is a fine line to differentiate the two. So it's always a need. Like a need to play games will want you to upgrade your video card.

I keep buying video cards because they haven't reached the point where I'm the bottleneck yet.
