Why do TV's make such bad monitors?

Use DVI to DVI only. HDMI, or adapters, is hit or miss depending on the TV and will probably require tweaking. Halfway decent TV's with a DVI input will route direct without the post-processing hassles others describe above.
 
Thanks for all the people who contributed to this thread. This is the first chance I've had to respond. I think the end user is going to buy a decent monitor and use the TV as a TV.
