why do tv and movies show people taking aspirin by chewing it up?

I saw two scenes last night where the actor took a bottle of aspirin and popped a few and instead of taking them with a liquid (even though the scene is shot in a bathroom) they chew them up.

yuck!!

any ATOT'ers do this?

I don't chew them. Most taste like crap except for Advil. I can, however, swallow them without water if needed.

I can chew up aspirin. Doesn't taste that bad actually.

Now non-aspirin pain relievers? No way.

No, I don't suck at taking tablets.

1. Open mouth
2. Insert tablet
3. Swallow
4. ???
5. Profit!

Someone explained to me once that Aspirin can aggravate ulcers and if you chew it up it's not as likely to sit in your stomach as once concentrated piece. Makes sense, but could be total horseshit for all I know.

I was going to say I put Tylenol in my ass, but that actually does exist.

I take advil instead of aspirin. They're pretty easy to swallow, so that's what I do.

It seems the medicine would be absorbed faster if you chew or crush it up first, as the surface area would be increased. I'm not sure if that would make much difference for aspirin though.

Pills not meant for chewing are often on a time release; you're really not supposed to take it all in at once. If you chew something like a once-per-day adderall (amphetamine), it will make you trip out rather than pay attention. Chewing a slow release aspirin might cause stomach pain.

When I was a little kid, my mom would put asprin on a spoon full of sugar, it helped the medicine go down.

When I was a little kid I got an aspirin stuck in my throat trying to swallow it and thought I was choking. After that I refused to take them other than by just chewing them until I was 12-13.

I snort it. Or sometimes make it into a liquid and syringe it into my ear drum, just for the fun of it.

I think your definition of "trip out" is a bit different than mine. ;)

chewable aspirin gets absorbed faster than the coated ones (in stomach vs intestines). makes a difference when effect is time critical, such as in chest pain.
