Why do toasters always have a setting that burns the toast to a horrible crisp which no decent human being would eat?

I always store my bread in the freezer. When I want some toast, I get two slices out, put it on that setting, and voila, toasted bread that you couldn't tell was frozen!
Bread doesn't keep long enough when placed outside or in the fridge.

I would be a tad uneasy defrosting my toast in a toaster. Water+heating elements = shock
