Why do they put poppy seeds on bread products?

I just had a poppy seed bagel, and by the time I was done, my hands were covered in seeds, as was the table, plate, and floor. I spent five minutes trying to clean it up, and still have an ocassional seed somewhere on my body.

Why did some baker decide to put these seeds on muffins, bagels and the like? Do they have a taste? Because to me, the only difference between a poppy seed bagel and a regular bagel is the mess involved.

Poppy seeds definetly have a flavour to them.. If you're not a sloppy eater there shouldn't be any problem.

I work in a Bakery and I don't really have an answer for that. My guess is that people don't like just "plain" bagels, but want something on them. Poppyseeds/Seasame seeds don't taste like much, but I guess they add a certain texture or something which people want?

Poppy seeds have a definite flavor and also add texture. Most people aren't as anal retentive as you in trying to retrieve every single seed that they paid for.

So you can fail drug tests.

when i was in the navy, a guy i worked for got popped on the drug test due to eating too many poppy muffins
that is what he claimed, i knew the guy quite well and i believe him

it happened right after i got transferred, i heard he was cleared of the charges after some further testing/investigations

It's more about my dislike for getting it all over the table/hands then consuming every seed I payed for. I guess I'll just leave the poppy seed ones for those who can taste the difference, and eat meticulously enough to not mess up their dining area.

How long do they stay in the system?....i've had some poppy seeded products....and getting tested next week....worried. I've also been smoking like a chimney this week...maybe the tobacco overrode the poppy seeds in my body.

The poppy flower makes OPIUM... not heroin... geez... didn't anyone listen when in the thrid grade the local cop came in with the NARC bag and told everyone how bad using drugs and marijuana was? Probably too stoned or too dumb to remember.

Depends on the amount you consumed, when you consumed them, your weight, your metabolism, etc. If you had poppy seeds, had a drug test soon afterwards, you'd likely test positive for opiates.

saw a group do a test on tv on how long you could test positive for opium after eating poppy seeds... the guy ate 3 poppy seed bagels and was still testing positive for opium 72 hours later
