Because...
One is the loneliest number that you'll ever do
Two can be as bad as one, its the loneliest number since the number one

LOL quoted for idiocy

It's not really idiotic. It's pretty arbitrary to say that a particular number makes more sense than any other unless there is some specific reason for it. The OP is a big baseball fan - why are there 9 innings in a baseball game?

There is little to no mention of the number 3 in this post! :|

I ruled out 1 and 2, 3 is the next logical step :p

no think. Four quarters makes sense because its a QUARTER a game. After you are done with 4 you have 4/4 or 1 full game. Makes quite a bit of sense.

Now why they decided on dividing the game into quarters is up to anyone to guess. But three is a bit odd admittidly

Yes, I realized you didn't understand his point. He was focusing on the number 4, not whether they named them quarters or periods. Obviously the reason they named them quarters is because there are 4 of them. He could have said "4 periods" to make his point more obvious, but he didn't because the divisions of a game are not called periods in football. He trusted that people would realize his point. Sadly, he was wrong.

Because you cannot have 1 or 2, that's just not American. But 4 is way too much hockey for any sane person to take in. Thus 3 is the only option.

It just depends how you read it. I read it as questioning quarters. And why there would be 4 quarters.

Now if you read it as just why 4 divisions makes sense in the game then its a perfectly valid question :)

Just giving you a hard time

I don't know what kind of backwoods mathmatical logic you're trying to use here, but I won't stand for it. :|

I really am interested in whether there was a specific reason for picking 3 periods now... in a way an even number would make more sense, since you switch sides after every period... of course there's no real advantage to a side indoors, but when played outdoors there could be a difference.

They did studies and found that a total time of 3 periods (1 hour) produce the best games, hockey player don't get too tired or still have too much energy left to spare to get into fights after the game. Then they looked into how to divide the game into periods and found that having the Zamboni out twice during a game get the most excitment from the fans, thus the use of three periods.

The Zamboni guy gets more cheers from the fans than the players.

Now they use two Zambonis - twice the excitement in half the time!

Because when they drew up the initial rules they couldn't make up their mind on how to divide the game up... so this is how that line in that initial rule book read:

The game shall be divided into . . .

:)
