Why do they even need umpires at baseball games any longer?

I mean, don't we have some sort of laser grid detection system with a red and green light to automatically indicate ball or strike? Wouldn't that be much better than relying on the subjective judgement and eyeballs of some old geezers?

A much better question is...with the RFID technology available, why are football fields not completely covered with sensors that will read both ends of the football, the players shoes, and their bodies? The field could be covered in one inch grids that would eliminate having to bring out the chains to measure progress, and there would be zero argument about stepping out of bounds, whether the player broke the plane of the goal, etc.
Get rid of the "human element" that is the referee/judge system that's been used since the game began...

There are stadiums who have problems with their PA system and play clock. There's no way something like that would be reliable enough. As much as I'd like something like that to exist, I just don't see it yet.

For almost everything ref related in sports I'm all for computers/replay but something about balls and strikes makes me want a human factor. Even yelling at that one umpire (can't remember the name) that always takes FOREVER to call a ball or strike adds something to the game.

LOL, as I'm thinking about this again, and football. There are many times when there are video evidence of something that was contradicting with the call on the field, and even the "rules expert" on TV agree that it should be called certain way. And after review, the refs still call it whatever they want. Yeah, why do I even bother.

Fine, you can have your umpire yelling ball or strike, but only based on the green or red light by the super accurate laser detection grid. :colbert:
