Why do they charge high fees for some mmorpgs?

I am wondering why they charge a subscription fee on top of the xbox live subscription fee for the xbox live mmorpg's. Why not just factor it into the cost of the game? Or make the game free, but to play it you need to pay a certain amount in subscription fees for a year of play... something like that. Or make the game cheap to buy and with a few features that you don't need to have been online to get, but so that you want to go online to get the rest and pay the fee for a years subscription, none of this monthly crap.

Well unrelated to the Xbox, the MMORPG Asheron's Call 1 and 2 has a full live dev team that continually evolves the storyline, adds features, fixes bugs etc. No need for expansion packs (Asheron's Call 1 had one 2 years after release). This is a lot better than EQ!

If it requires any kind of fee I dont play it. Probably why I stuck with Diablo 2 for so long and I am still playing Dungeon Siege.

I totally disagree. I found AC MUCH more fun than evercamp.

And like the other guy mentioned you don't need to buy 4 expansion packs to get the whole game. In fact buying AC Dark majesty is all you need now, it has the whole original game too.

Everyone complains about monthly fees, but I find the time I get out of playing mmorpgs for the amount of money I put into it is better then what I get out of games that don't require such fees. This is probably a personal thing though as mmorpgs are my favorite type of online game.

Regardless, I seem to get bored of mmorpgs much less quickly then other games, in the end I think I end up saving money with only having to pay monthly fees instead of needing to buy another game to play.

Why not just call them Graphical MUDs?

Multi-User Dungeons&dragons.

I totally agree! Been playing AC1 for 3 years. I tried EQ, but it was way too tedious.

It costs money to run a server. $10 a month is nothing compared to what you pay for other stuff. A burger, fries, and a drink are half that.

YOu still play DS? No one ever wants to play. I lent my CDs to a friend and he lost them, then I burned it from a backup, and I haven't seen him on AIM since.

Mostly the cost of running the servers and patching the game / adding features. $10/month is very cheap considering you can easily spend that amount to go see a movie that lasts 2 hours whereas the game is available 24/7.
