Why do they call them funeral "homes"?

my sister lived at a funeral home for a while. they worked the front desk evenings in exchange for free rent (an apartment in the back of the funeral home)

Maybe because they replaced having funerals in an actual home? When my great grandmother died they actually had her casket and funeral in my grandmothers house. This is the way it used to be done prior to funeral homes.
