because it is believed that on the continent, people only have a light breakfast... muffins, fruit, cereal, etc.... as opposed to a full cooked breakfast like they are thought to eat in the UK... and in the USA... friend eggs, sausage, potatoes, etc... (unless of course you live in NJ, where the staple breakfast is a buttered roll and a 32oz cup of coffee)
;)

"the continent"? what's the continent? you seem to be implying that "the continent" is not UK or USA

I literally stayed at a place recently that had "Continental breakfast" and it was just a toaster and bread.

"The continent" is how the British distinguish themselves from the rest of Europe. 'Cause they're an island off the coast of the continent, in case you missed that class too.

In this instance, yes. The continent is meant Europe but not Britian.

the continent does refer to europe, in england/ireland breakfast is like here in NA, in many parts of europe, breakfast is fruit, muesli, yogurt, cheese and other selections like that

and its excellent!

in spain a fried egg is fried in a pot of oil! not a fry pan

Correct.

Suggestion: When staying at a Hoilday Inn Express, stay far away from the hard boiled eggs in their breakfast bar.
