Why do they call font-alaising cleartype?

I've always known it as font-alaising. So when I hear cleartype, I have no idea what it means.

Maybe that's because I never bothered with windows.

and it does what it's supposed to do... for most people anyway

oh and i believe it's "anti-aliasing" not "aliasing"

ClearType is a special kind of anti-aliasing that utilizes the clean-cut subpixels of LCD monitors. If you look in "Display Properties->Appearance->Effects", you'll see that the "Use the following method to smooth edges of screen fonts" dropdown menu contains both "Standard" and "ClearType". "Standard" is normal anti-aliasing.
