Like when someone says, "let's get a cup of joe".

Or why do they call it Java for that matter?

I think it may have something to do with the "Joes" drinking it in WWI and WWII.

Just a guess though.

Sorry, can you be a little more specific? Who are they? I'm asking because I never heard people call coffee 'joe', it's absolutely new to me. Where is this use of the word common? Who usually calls it 'joe'?
>>

I believe during WW2 a senator named Joe proposed making coffee the strongest drink available to sailors it was passed and sailors nicknamed coffee a cup of joe

Hmmm... I don't watch TV a lot, you know... Maybe I didn't watch those very films where they used the word... And I really don't hear this word being used for coffee anywhere around... Anyway, I'm completely ignorant on the subject, asked you just out of interest.

Found the following from africacoffee.com:

<< Two new names which are catching on are "joe" and "hojo." These are not names for ports or for places. The U.S. Navy used to allow alcoholic beverages on U.S. Navy ships. Grog, Ale, and Beer were the supplied as a beverage in the general mess. When Admiral Josephus "Joe" Daniels became Chief of Naval Operations, he outlawed alcohol on board ships. He ordered coffee become the beverage of service on the ships, hence the term "Cup of Joe." Because sailors are generally cold, they wanted their coffee hot. The term hot cup of joe was use, then it was shorten to hot joe, then hojo. >>

And for Java:

<< During this period, coffee was introduced to Indonesia by the Dutch. Legend has it that the plant which was introduced in Java, in 1696, was one of the seven high jacked from Arabia. Java became a coffee producing area. However, both the port of Mocha in Yemen and Java in Indonesia could not ship enough coffee to supply the growing demand in Europe. It should be noted that these two ports' names are how coffee got the name Java and Mocha. Any how, the price got so high that only those Europeans rich enough to afford exotic luxuries could drink coffee. >>

This is the link I found those two tidbits.

Naw, Google rocks. Took a couple of tries to find the right key words. I think coffee joe java history wound up being the winning combination.

Yeah, I was pretty sure "Joe" had come from the navy, but I wasn't sure. I figured Java was from the island as well. The site was an interesting read, nonetheless, even though I'm not a coffee drinker.
