Why do they ask for objections during a wedding ceremony?

In case the bride is a well known whore, and the groom is the only one there that dosen't know it.

so they can have dramatic finishes in movies where someone stands up and professes their love for the bride/groom at the last second.

Probably cause in ye olden days marriage ceremonies were a legally binding contract and thus you must allow for the declaration to be opposed before being accepted fully? (Like patents are given a time of opposition before being accepted legally. Unlike today where most of the legally binding parts of marriage is done at county courts?)
