Why do they allow retail cars to go well above the maximum speed limits??

yes, they could. And people would disable it, just like they currently disable the existing speed limiters.

Just be glad they don't.

Why not put a limit on the amount of food you buy at a fast food restaurant? Why not put a limit on the number of packs of cigarettes you can buy? why not put a limit on the number of bottles of alcohol that you buy? Get the point?

there's no explicit law against eating too much i think... but there's an explicit law against speeding.

Because buying an excess of those things is not illegal. Using an excess of those things is not illegal. You can smoke 10 packs a day, eat 20 BigMacs, and drink a gallon of rum and that'd be perfectly legal. Going 180 mph on the road isn't legal.

on public roadways.

I can't go around public property waving a chainsaw with a few HP, but I sure as hell can on my own property.

Does that mean we shouldn't have chainsaws?

um, there are other roads that are not public ya know.

Yup.

so why do they often put a limiter on at ~115 MPH?

on "real" cars they don't. Heck, I can't think of a car that is limited at 115. 130/140 maybe and that's only the "non-real" cars.

But the people who would go and race would probably be willing to put the little time and effort it takes to remove a governer. In the mean time it's still there for us joes.

I know mercedes electronically limits the speed of their vehicles to 155 or so due to some restrictions. In Europe, people have routinely been disabling it for years.

Good question really......

I think it's because our government likes to let us think we're free.

Ah but there is.

There's a law prohibiting excessive speed because it is dangerous. Proper use of a car however is allowed.

There's a law prohibiting dangerous use of a chainsaw (you'd get arrested for it... specific laws are...). Proper use of a chainsaw is allowed though.

And you can't wave a chainsaw around like a maniac on your own property if you're endangering someone else.

Actually, they DO put a limiter on "real" cars (cobra, vette, BMW, what have you), but I answered my own question when I realized it's to keep you from exceeding the speed rating of your tires.

/edit: and I typed that up before everyone else said it, I swear!😱
