Why do the USA/Canada never show taxes in the price?!

You get your thing, go to pay, get out the right money, then realise you need to pay the ax extra to the listed price! Why don't shops put up the prices including tax so you get the actual price? Why would you care about the non tax price, since it's the tax price you pay, or they could at least put both.

Just a rant, and a question. Is there any reason for it?
I can understand mag prices being without tax, since I don't think all taxes are the same, but with food or whatever on the shelves, why not show taxes?!

Its just a different concept. I guess it makes the tax "less hidden". If the tax were 10%, you know the tax is 10%, as it clearly says on the receipt.

Europe has it the other way around. They have something called a VAT, where the tax is built in to the price. If the government were to raise the tax by .5%, it'd be less noticeably unless you have read the news.

I only know of one store here that shows Tax too.. CompuSmart... but its in real small print. Id be less likely to buy a $300 purchase if they added the tax on and showed it being $45 in tax. Besides I account for tax anyways. And most food purchases in a grocery store are tax free... its the non essential type items that get taxed

Whoops hit reply too early,

Also its hard for a company to sell for a advertized price in many states since most states have different sales taxes.

A car might cost 20,000, but in Mass add 6% but if you are in RI add 7%. its easier to advertise on the price. Plus that is the price.
Tax isn't part of the price of an item. its just that a TAX.

Different tax rates for different regions?

In NY, there are several different rates depending on the county.
NYC 8.25%, LI 8.5%, upstate somewhere is another %, go to NJ and it's 6%.

Easier for them to just print one set of sales tags instead of personalizing them for every part of America.

I personally have the math done in my head before paying.

That is the main reason. Each city, each county, each state can have differing sales taxes. Imagine having to create and run tens of thousands of ads to show the tens of thousands of different prices. It just isn't possible to do that. At least for the countries I've visited in Europe, the tax was the same throughout the country. Thus no issues there.
