Why do the mods lock posts instead of deleting them?

Wouldn't it save a ton of space in the massive AT Forums database if the mods systematically deleted threads that were double posts and/or stupid threads?

What's the point in simply locking them? I can see if you want to set an example or if someone will want to search for the thread later (i.e. the 1 = .99999999 thread) but for dumb threads, why not just delete?

I personally like locking better than deleting. It's still nice to click on the locked threads and look at them and stuff.

They move to the bottom quite quickly anyway, since nobody can post in them.

I don't think you can delete threads in fusetalk.

Ahh.. yeah, that's true. It wouldn't hurt to delete those.

Shrug. Compared to the ammount of threads here, a few here and there aren't really going to make much of a space difference.

Sure the Mods can. I've seen it done before, but it usually only happens when somebody posted personal info that they really need removed from the forums.

For about an hour the 1=0.9999.... thread was deleted, but I convinced the Mods to put it back.

well most of the "delete me" are ones where the poster did something dumb and comes on here to brag about it. Then gets told he is a dumba$$ and then wants the thread deleted.
