Why do the British drink their beer at room temperature?

It is not warm.

It is just not refrigerated.

Most of the times the kegs are kept in the basements... which are cold and damp. there is no need for refrigeration. The beer is not always cold enough to make the glass sweat, but it is certainly not warm.

I drank a warm Schmidt this one time and it was the only beer I couldn't stand to finish.

You drink ice cold beer if you are drinking crappy beer, that way you don't taste how crappy it is.

Here's an article on beer serving temperatureslink

Beer - Normally called bitter, this is the most popular alcoholic beverage of the UK male drinking population. It is served in pints at just under room temperature (real ales, however are served AT room temperature). Real Ales are non carbonated beers made from hops and barley.

But I drank a Schmidt beer that was like 75 degrees. It was bad...and we all know that Schimdt beer is probably the most flavorsome beer in the entire galaxy.

There is an old joke about the British drinking warm beer because they all had Lucas refrigerators - the same company that made the terrible electrical components for Jaguar and other British cars. :)

I'm helping you, as you seem to not understand your own thread title. Also, that sentence is wholely untrue. Lager type beers are the most popular, not Bitters. That information appears to have been rescued from 1964.

Ale and beer are different. Post a thread about Ale and see how I respond.

werd. Many British people are raving alkies... if you invite one into your home I suggest you remove the cologne and rubbing alcohol from your bathroom, lol

Obviously a joke, but these people can drink like no others.

I guess at one point, when there was no refrigeration and there wasn't any such thing as an icebox...

(the brits never got into chilling beer as a prerequisite?)

Most of their beers are served cold (having visited London recently)

A pint of Guinness there was the same as a pint of Guinness here. Good beer is chilled, not cold. You need cold beer for Budweiser or crappy beer so you can't taste it. Chilled beer just makes the summer days feel good :)
