Why do television series cost eleventy bazillion dollars on DVD?

For instance DS9 90 bucks... why? I want to buy it, but i sure as hell am NOT paying that much money for it. And it's not like production costs are high. Explainarse to me please

has anyone here bought it? I have yet to see a season of star trek in a home and I have some hardcore nerd friends haha... I would think if they lowered the price they would easy make their money back in volume of sales?

Precisely! It's supply and demand. All hungry businessmen will get what they can for anything.

My favorite example is quite unknown to most Americans: TEXTBOOKS. In India, you can buy a lower-quality textbook with the exact same text in it for usually 1/10th of what we pay here for the same information. (The books are not authorized for sale in the U.S.) The difference we pay is certainly not in the cost differences of printing the book but rather in the amount of money we have available to spend on a book. Our discretionary income allows us to pay more for a book rather than using all of our money just to feed ourselves.

THAT is why a DVD costs so much, and I think they're greedy bastards.

P.S. Oh yeah, if we're paying to use the intellectual property of the book, why should a difference in quality mean such a drastic difference in price? Why can't I as an American-born student purchase those foreign textbooks myself? Even after shipping it's still amazingly cheap.

you should watch in series, its a lot better and you get all the in jokes and self-references

+ no commercials is always nice (except the cornballer and bob loblaw)

It's likely those books are pirated. Your not paying as much for the books not because of quality but precisely because your not paying for the intellectual property because they've been stolen. This might not be the case, but from reading the post I get this feeling.

i wanted to buy NipTuck but each season was like 50 bucks so i when i got back home i downloaded all 10 dvds. definitely worth the download time since i saved all that money

its a new market that really didn't exist before and its exploding in growth. the media companies are milking it for all its worth for now. it'll reach a point where people will no longer tolerate it though. its mostly for series that were before digital recording and the internet became widespread too.

Nope they are not pirated. McGraw hills or other publishing companies have those editions at a cheaper price.

and yea if they can charge 100 bucks for a season they will. they aim for the people that buy it can afford all those seasons and they profit. if they aim low the people that can afford one or two seasons at 25bucks arent all that lucrative.

It's not a good idea to post this, regardless whether your real name is on here or not.
