Why do stores charge extra for XXL clothing? Walmart, Target, Meijer...etc

Legality of the question aside (though it does seem a bit discriminatory), it just doesn't make any sense. They always price Small to XL the same, then charge extra for XXL and on up. If their reason is production/materials cost that makes even less sense, it takes a whole lot more material to go from Small to XL then from XL to XXL. Does anyone knows for sure why is it?

Part of it is that they sell few xxl sized clothes, so it probably costs more to produce them.

Why would it be illegal?

I would assume that sizes above XL have smaller production runs than standard S - XL, and they may even need to be specially ordered from the manufacturer. That would drive up the cost a bit.

The stupidity here never ceases to amaze me.

Of course it's legal.

As for the reason, it requires significantly more fabric to make those sizes.

There are basically two ways around this:

1) Price EVERY size differently (serious PITA)
2) Average the cost over all the product produced & sell all sizes for the same price. (much like is already done for "normal" sizes).

More fabric and production costs.

XL sells the most. Think of it this way. Small is cheaper to make fabric wise. But, they are marked up to be the same price as XL. Same for medium and large. Each require a bit more fabric, but production is a bit less because of higher sales. After the XL size, each additional size requires more fabric and production costs than an XL shirt, so they charge more.

Your argument makes sense that it takes far more additional material to make an XL vs. a S than XXL vs. XL. I'm guessing the reason they don't have different prices for those sizes is because the largest percentage of people fit into those sizes - more of a convenience thing.

Then again, I think all buffet type restaurants should charge based upon how much you weigh.

Not just a convenience...they are selling the S,M,L the same as the XL because they make more money that way rather than pricing them according to unit cost. But, since the 3XL costs even more than a XL, most companies just make the consumer pay for it.

Hell, I'm 6'3", 185 and I wear a medium (& 32/32 jeans). Used to wear a XL when I was 6'3" 250 (& 38/32 jeans). If you're 220 and wearing 2XL, you must either have NO muscle tone, or else you are shopping in the Fubu/Phat Farm section.
