Why do stores always do this?

Why do they price things at like $99.99 and $39.99. (With so many 9's at the end)

Why can't they just make it easier for everyone and make it an even $100 or $40.

Interesting. I've nver heard of the newspaper theory, but the management practice of reducing theft by sales clerks has been kicked around for years. I hear that's also why registers used to make that "ring" whenever you "rung" something up. If the owner did not hear a ring after a customer left the store, he would suspect the clerk pocketed the sale money.

It's probably just because it works. Even if you don't admit it, you're likely more willing to buy something that's $49.99 than something that's 50 bucks. Even if you aren't, probably at least half the population is.

It's totally pyschological, which sounds better 99.99 or 100. Of course 99.99 because it isn't 100. Apparently they want our money :Q

The bigger issue is gas stations ending in xx.9 cents. They want to be under $2 per gallon, but not that much under.

I love the stations that advertise 2.359 per gallon.

Maybe because it gives some people the belief that it is cheaper than it really is? Think $2 instead of $3 when you see $2.99

i don't understand that either, but the stores and gas station will charge you tax though, if you bought a item for $10.99, they charge you taxes based on $11 instead.

Why do you love that? That's the actual price.
