It was a big fashion trend in the 50s and 60s. Fashion trends come and go. It might look bad by today's fashions, but then it would have been bad fashion to not do it.
Another 'retarded' fashion trend. Just like rolling up the jeans. If Hollywood and the glamour type magazines said walking around with mold growing on your head was the newest fashion, most women would do it.
