Why do some URL's require you type in "www"?

Incorrectly configured zone file. The IP address is setup only for "www.bhmotorsports.com" with no alias entry for just plain "bhmotorsports.com".

Nowadays, I click the "name alias" button at register.com. But, here's what one of mine looked like manually configured, before I got smart:

campaignhq.com. IN NS ns1.granitecanyon.com.
campaignhq.com. IN NS ns2.granitecanyon.com.

campaignhq.com. IN RP russ.compucheap.com. russ.campaignhq.com.

russ.campaignhq.com. IN TXT "Russ Stringham, NIC handle: RS6940"

localhost.campaignhq.com. IN A 127.0.0.1

campaignhq.com. IN A 207.108.218.139

www.campaignhq.com. IN CNAME campaignhq.com.
*.campaignhq.com. IN CNAME campaignhq.com. ;GLOBALOK

campaignhq.com. IN MX 10 campaignhq.com.

To set your domain correctly, you need to set 'domain.com' as your primary host, and sub-domains (www/ftp/mail/...) as aliases (or if they're going to different computers, hosts).

So if I just contact the webmaster can he fix it, assuming he's not an idiot? And what if he is an idiot... show him this thread? 🙂

I think you'll just wer out your email client if you try. There are SO many of these sites it's just pitiful. But yes, if you really want to you can contact them. Or better yet, contact the president of the company. Nothing makes an admin's day like a PO'd trickle down complaint about a server problem.

Why don't we all just play our part and be the lazy web surfers that we are also. Just hit control-enter without entering "www" or "com" in a domain name. Like type yahoo and just hit control enter. Just make sure you're using IE and have autocomplete on. You'll love it... you lazy a$$. 😉

I learned something new, thanks! Of course, this should be the default behavior like it is on the Mac.
