Why do some people seem to assume someone else is stupid just because that person doesn't speak English well?

My dad was asking a salesperson a question and the salesperson mumbled her reponse, I couldn't even undertand what she said. My dad asked her what she said and the salesperson explained it like my dad was a five year old, speaking slowly and simplifying everything. My dad has been in America for 25 years, has and has a PhD. He can understand English perfectly, just speaks with a slight accent. I can undertand speaking slowly for a non-native English speaker to understand, but she didn't have to simplify it like she would for a toddler.

From your description it sounds to me like the person didn't realize they were not understood because they mumbled and assumed that your fathers english abilities were less than they are.

I get stuff like that every once in a while. Not because I don't *speak* english well, but because I wear a hearing aid. I wear an older model, that sits on top / behind my ear, so people can see it. Sometimes when they do, they make the automatic assumption that I'm dumb as a rock, regardless of wether I've said anything yet or not :|

Maybe she's just an asshat?
Rest easy in the knowledge that her boyfriend will probably donkey punch her tonight, right before he empties her purse for drinking money. Karma's a bitch.

Keep in mind also that if a person has trouble understanding a language, speaking slower *does* help.

yeap. i have a cross-aid myself. Once people find out i have a hearing loss they will either start talking to my wife or really dumb down stuff.

now that i'm older i just ask them if they have a problem and mention that deaf does not equal dumb.

If somebody really starts getting ignorant about it, I like to take the thing out and act like I'm handing it to them - "Here, you obviously need this more than I do." :p
