Why do some people pronounce words incorrectly when they know the correct way?

Inspired by this thread: http://forums.anandtech.com/me...=2150603&enterthread=y where apparently the OP thinks you are gay if you pronounce melee correctly.

Why would someone pronounce something incorrectly when they know the proper pronunciation? Are they just trying to be grammar rebels or something?

I don't get it.

PS: may-lay != teh ghey!

Don't get me started on "Aks"

Or the random adding of the letter "s" to words.

"Con Sarnit! I forgot to put on my underwears this mornin'!"

I wondered that too. OP is just trying to be elitist in that thread and that's all there is to it.

He thought we'd all agree with him since it's a commonly mispronounced word but instead found himself looking foolish.

I thought he called it "extra feminine".

I didn't realize they were the same...

For all intensive purposes, you are correct. :p

Based upon the OP and subsequent posts I was interpreting "extra feminine" to be a euphemism for gay. I may be incorrect though.

Yeah, basically, dude came to the wrong place to make fun of geeks. Ended up walking away with egg on his face.

Another one I hear every now and then is "for all intensive purposes". Isn't it supposed to be "for all intents and purposes"?

lol...god I hate that.

The problem with mispronunciation of words is that it denotes a certain level of education and/or I.Q.

Most notably the lower level....if you can't speak correctly, can't write correctly and cannot articulate your ideas without sounding like a buffoon....how can you expect someone to take you seriously.

When I hear someone speak like a 10 year old and they are in their 30's....I just laugh.

Because they can?
I myself fall into the mispronouncing camp on that particular word, because I like the incorrect pronunciation more.
Me-lee sounds more like lopping off heads than may-lay.
Unless, of course, I'm being over the top and describing something as "a grim may-lay," then I'll revert to proper form.
