Why do some people insist on using Farenheit?

Here's an idea, stop ranting and go fix that FUBARed system you constantly post about problems with

Fahrenheit is standard in the U.S.

Stop using that stupid Celsius! :D

What's the big deal? Give the weather in F like every news station in the country, and PC temps in C since it's most commonly used.

uhhh, exactly. Celsius is not the standard measure used by the United States. Whether you agree or not Fahrenheit is used. Maybe that will change. We don't use the metric system either as a standard but it is used widely in all applications. Go figure

Didn't that Mars lander crash and burn because some NASA guys "insist on using Farenheit"?

i think its because we are american and generally stupid.

but if we are going to communicate and interact together as an entire world, we all need to agree on a standard. if you speak the language of teh fArehneitz no one will understand you.

its like...buying an american car in Yen.

I agree, use Celsius! It is only "standard" in the US for day to day use, not for Enginneering or Scientific use for good reason.

No, one guy used centimeters, other used inches. Suprisingly, the end result was in... uhh... centinches?

Metric owns.. but growing up in Windsor, Ontario... just across from Detroit Michigan, I grew up using Fahrenheit.
I think Fahrenheit represents the warmer spectrum better, and Celcius represents the cooler spectrum better.. so I switch according to season.. LOL

like, 32F just doesn't sound cold. 0C (32F) sounds cold. :)

We lost a Marian rover due to a NASA engineering forgetting to convert miles to kilometers. Something has to be done. Science, math, computers, everything = metric! US = Standard!!!!!!! We are idiots.

I use celsius constantly. Power tu da Cee.

I don't know what type of thermostat you have at your place, but the only ones I;ve ever seen here in America were in F. It would be pointless to convert F to C when getting ambient temperature.

I don't know, I am just stalling writing an essay due tomorrow. Crappy literary analysis....

In general most people have to have it intergrated into their lives. ie the can of soda versus the popularity of the 1 lt bottle. It is all a matter of reference. You can understand almost anything if you can somehow relate to the material.

It's kinda funny how you get "fluent" in the different measurement scales just like languages.

I can kinda translate english to spanish if I have enough time and a dictionary in front of me, but I still think in english. I can convert inches to mm, but can easily picture 6" and would have little idea how large 150mm is.

I also work in the SEMI industry, so I know that 200mm and 300mm are roughly equivalent to 8" and 12" (well, and that kinda means I know what 150mm is, but forget about that for now).

However, most of the time, I need to convert things to inches to really understand how large something is. I still need to convert Kg to Lb, even though I spent 4 years in college determining the bending stress on a 2 m long cantilevered beam due to a 100 Kg mass. Earth's gravitational acceleration will always be 32.2 ft/sec^2 rather than 9.8m/sec^2.

Finally, I know that -42 F is fricken cold (when I went skiing in Montana once) and that 110 is damn hot. The only temp I know in celcius is 20, since that's the standard for measurements (and it's a cool 68 F).

Anyhow, it really takes full immersion in one set of units before you can really start to use it in daily life. I even learned all the metric stuff in elementary school 20 years ago and it still hasn't gained much use in the US. Although, our company is starting to use both inches and mm on our mechanical drawings, so at least there's a bit of progress.

-D'oh!

The whole world uses Celcuis to gadge temperature, US of A is the one that prefers to be different from the rest of the world. Same goes to standard voltage power( 115V instead of 220 - 240 V ) , measurement of weight ( lbs instead of Kgs ) , length inches instead of cm/meters , left hand drive (Canada had to follow along), slightly different traffic rules, american english instead of british english, Using quarter of 25 cents instead of 20 cents.

Many more differences. So you tell me who is odd.

Using quarter of 25 cents instead of 20 cents? WTF
One quarter is 1/4 of something. 100 cents = $1. 25/100 = 1/4. 20 cents would be a fifth. That makes perfect sense.

As someone else said, It's a matter of what you can relate it to.
My height
6 ft
72 inches
2 yards
~1.83 m
1828.8 mm
182.88cm

Which do you prefer? Even people in the same place may prefer something different. I know what a yard is(too many years of football). If someone uses that unit of of measure I instantly know how long something is. Most people don't. I can guess a measurement almost spot on for yards. The way I do feet is make my yard gues, and multiply it by 3. Most people do that just the opposite.

Attention all non Americans: We use what we call the "Standard" measurement system here in the US. We realize it's not what the rest of the world uses. We realize the metric system makes a lot more sense in some ways. We stick with our system because it's familiar and because the cost of switching to the metric system would be billions of dollars. We aren't asking you to use our system. So get over it :D

The voltage standard is differnt because of the time it was deployed.... I would like to see the power companies make everything that can't switch obsolete just because some foriegners thought it was stupid, what we get for first generation deployment(Yet another example of why not to do it). Only thing I really don't ever use celcius for is temperature(though some show the forcast in it now) ... I just know the standard temperatures for doing labs in school in celcius... other then that I don't know what the numbers are. BTW I have noticed that most companies rate their components in Celcius... perhaps our vast relocation of manufacturing and greater international trade will finally convert us? O well what am I just another dumb American. BTW you can put two 110-120 Volts(yeah its 110-120 not 115 standard, really lol) together make a 220-240 Volt circuit, which is what ovens, dryers, and electric stove tops run at. I guess we couild convert and throw away everything besides our computers(well most) and already higher power systems... I think you have no luck pulling that one here. Driving on the right side?... so it makes more sense to me... I look at the Europeans as being backwards on that one... o and I am sorry we had to modify English slightly(I like it better myself HA!) Sure I would like to have all Metric, but thats going to take a while, American Cars for one(though now a lot are mixed with both, making it much worse), but when I really think about it my generation is probably the most accepting of metric, everyone here grew up on a differnt system, and it takes time to switch(unless you want to piss off the people by infringing on their right *COUGH, seriously they might as well make us switch to metric with all this Patriot Act crap, it probably wouldn't even be noticed, Democracy is dead, every senator say what get you into office then start working for your corporate supporters, only say this because a lot of laws being passed lately are not in favor of the American People, are not wanted by the American People, and if they were actually to vote for a lot of them themselves they would probably not, I hope we move back to back to direct (true)democracy and not this republic crap, maybe the internet will finally allow this, when its free, secure, and non-proprietary(seriously proprietary stuff is not net friendly and will die like the dinosaur that it is(Just mean non-standard/proprietary web standards not software... that will take.... longer)).)

Longish Post... ehh Sorry
