Why do some people have a "banned" title and others don't?

Are the ones with the banned title perma banned or vice versa? or does it have an altogether different meaning?

Always nice to see you people keeping it on topic

Only those who have personally had the permaban stick applied to their backside can earn the title "Banned".

Actually, I have no idea.

It depends on the method used to institute the vacation. Whatever the method chosen, the results are that a banned member has no access to PMs (or anything else, really) and has "banned" as a title while a member vacationed through the infraction system (either automatic vacation for points/number of infractions or deliberate time off) or by choosing to make them "not active" can still communicate with us via PMs or the Moderator Discussion forum. There is no change to the member title of those people while they are on vacation. Members with "banned" as a title may or may not be permabanned although most (such as spammers) are.

Hopefully this makes sense and helps.

so does this mean that we are forever without the delightful rantings of Mr Gaynor, or is it just temporary?

LOL at the terms "vacationed", "permabanned", AND moderator ... is/was there a lawyer in the audience?

They are just wa-a-ay PC, but that is just me thinking about how would I explain these terms to the totally uninformed or non-forum users.

I could be wrong, but vacationed came from the old forum, and you didn't have "banned" in your title unless it was what today is a permaban.

So today:
vacationed = a ban for a limited amount of time (will still have banned in your title while vacationed)
permabanned = a ban forever
moderator = always the same, those of us here who "moderate" the forums, and administer warnings/vacations/bans to users.

they aren't exactly unique terms or things that were conjured for internet forums. permabanned perhaps, but permanent ban speaks for itself. a vacation is a short leave, just like in real life. and things have been moderated since folks began speaking, probably even before.

schniknok, probforblant and orantoferplob would be pretty hard to explain tho, i would imagine.

This is not correct. You'd think the "moderators" of this forum would know how it works. Users who are "not active" do NOT have access to PMs or the mod forum (I'm not totally sure about the latter actually, but definitely NOT private messaging). They also can't access their own profile information or look at profiles of other users, browse L&R or perform searches. Members who are banned can not even access the forum (for reading) without logging out (which obviously means clearing cookies, because you can't access the logout link).

You'd think so, wouldn't you? What I posted was my understanding, but, since I've never been on that list, I can't actually vouch for it. I have asked and will report the answer. Thanks for your input.

I'll telly you why.
Cuz some people are mods & mod bitches, and some people are not.
http://forums.anandtech.com/showthread.php?p=30806493

The people who are not, get banned.

Fuck this place. And fuck the mods who act like cunts and then cover each other up like president covering a colossal FBI fuckup.
And fuck the hypocrisy they practice every god damn day in what used to be a damn nice forum.

There is the Mod discussion forum that you can use for a "callout" .
Mod callouts elsewhere are not allowed and you know that.

from what i have been told (in previous situations) he was posting as a forum poster and not a mod there, so you could have just insulted him back (even tho he wasn't even talking to you?) and it would have been fine. note the use of bold and not bold, it will save you quite a few headaches in the future.

also, this is not a call out! just an explanation attempt, although shorty should obviously know better.

The poster here has got it right. I couldn't have said it better myself. :)
