From a simple empirical point of view, the government IS always conspiring against the average citizen. All those lobbyists... all those 2000 page bills... all of it done to serve themselves, at the expense of the average citizen. Very little legislation is written in actual service of the common man. Maybe 1% at best. The other 99% is written by and for the profit of special interests. Again, at the expense of the common citizen. One would be a fool to blindly trust the government.
