Why do some people ask for tips?

I was getting on a cruise about 2 weeks ago and we have to drop all of our bags off outside (We were going on carnival cruises by the way, on a the fascination ship) and when we gave it to this guy, my dad gave him a dollar for tip. Now, the guys says $1 per bag and we had 3 bags other than my backpack which I keep with me sinec I love my tablet pc and wireless sprint and AT&T cards which I wouldn't trust that guy with.

My dad just gives him the money and doesn't even argue because it was pointless to start a cruise off the bad way. Oh yeah, and for those of you who haven't gone on their cruise, they charge $40 for tip for the entire cruise so you don 't have to tip the people during the cruise, actually makes life much easier so we don't always have to have $1 bills with us. We figure those guys that take the bags in don't get part of that tip so we just gave it then but some people really should think about what it makes them look like when they ask for a larger tip...

The rest of the cruise was great incase anyone is wondering the best part was food. You could eat and order anything at no extra cost since its covered from the tickets and everything. I ordered room service like twice or thrice a day, ate really good french fries, ordered pizza at my leisure, had ice cream as I felt like it, etc. The only thing we had to pay for was soft drinks, if we wanted those. Being cheap, I didn't get any 😛

I tip everyone...I have worked as a pizza guy...and learned how much a tip is appreciated

today's lunch for 2 people was around $15 bucks, the guy got a $5 tip

Is that SOP that soft drinks aren't included? I always thought everything was covered except alcohol.

I'd love to go on a cruise sometime. You mentioned you brought your wireless setup, did the ship have 802.11b or did you just use cellular. Cause a ship with 802.11b would be just another reason to go on a cruise 🙂

If you think about it, for all the stuff you order, $40 isn't much of a tip. Baggage handlers and bartenders and such, I'd feel obligated to tip them, but I wouldn't leave a full 20% for food (unless service was stellar or something).

I think they didn't mind asking for a bigger tip because they knew they would never ever see you again. Tourism is like that, whereas restaurants aren't.

I think they're afraid of kids like me drinking all the coke there is, hehe.

As for the internet, we have some wireless cards that connect using the methods a cell phone uses only in this I don't have to use a seperate cell phone, it just connects to any participating provider if they aren't available, its like roaming without extra charge. The only catch is once you move away from the land, it doesn't work. But on the cruise, it doesn't matter anymore, hehe, it was a ton of fun. They do have an "Internet cafe" type place but the rates aren't the best, even with their best plan, you pay like 40 cents a minute, and thats if you prepay for an hour or something.

As for the tip, I forgot to mention, $40 per person, so since it was a 5 day cruise and there were 4 of us, the whole family, almost like $30 a day for tips.

Oh yeah, at the islands, haggling was soooo much fun. We got off to an island, it was obviously an area created just for tourists that was probably funded by the cruise people in mexico. We got there, they wanted $200 for an aztec calendar done by hand. We said thats too much, they said 30% off for those on a cruise. Also, this is a place seperate from the rest of mexico so there is no point for people other than cruise ship passengers to come. She did 30% off and we told her we were thinking a lot lower still. She kept going down, and we just gave up. We also noticed a bag that said the name of the island for $20, went a store over, it was $11.

Oh, and did I mention there was a Tax and duty free shop nearby? We'll, come to the island, we went through it since we first wanted to look around. In the end, we bought nothing from the island since the prices were so damn high, even though there was a chess set which I really liked, at $50, guy would give it for $40. I let it go. We went to the Tax and Duty free shop, how much was it? $20!?!?!?! So then we also bought some other stuff there since their prices were so much better for the exact same thing. We got an Aztec calendar, didn't look as nice, but about $10. We also got some other small stuff but the prices there were much better and they took credit cards without an extra charge unlike the other stores and my dad didn't want to give $200 in cash cause for all we know they could be bsing us and then when we realize it, deny everything.

Oh yeah, we're origionally from India, and its kind of like Mexico and so my parents were used to haggling.

I think those people that ask for tips are trailer park trash! It's something you don't do! If someone is nice enough to give you something beyond your salary, then you should be grateful. People should be grateful for working in an industry that involves tips. What about those who get the same base salary, but with no tips?

People are just greedy and ungrateful.

I agree... just not as harshly 😕

I think tiping for some things is way out of line. I don't tip Pizza people. My brother argues that "they use their own car and their own gas to make a living" and I say "Yes, and they knew this before taking the job." If the job doesn't pay you enough to make it worth it, then don't take the job. I've worked fast food for 5 years, and no one has ever tipped me for doing the best damn job on earth. I get your food made and have you seated in 30 seconds, and all I get is a dirty table. No matter how hard a bust my ass, no one ever tips me, why should I tip other people just for doing their job?

The only exception I make is when I have a cute waitress. Then I write my phone number on it too. And then they call and want me and stuff. wee!

It is typical to tip $1.00/ bag for porters, bellhops, anyone who handles your bag for you.
<been travling for 25+ years and this is one constant.
Many nationalities are not as familiar with tipping conventions here in the US.
Last week I was in Holland and plain just asked the lady if tipping was customary. I was in a price fixed hotel, and didn't want lugies in my Latte.
BTW, I tipped her 1 euro for 3 Lattes.
