Why do some parents think their children owe them something?

I know this will eventually result in a flame war, but before that happens, why do some parents feel thier kids owe them something, and why do some parents accuse thier kids of being freeloaders? Further, why do so many parents relish the day their kids leave, or complain about the money they spend on thier kids?

Just going to wait for pro-lifers to comment, then I'll have something to say.

Respect is earned, and many parents have earned it, but respect does not mean you owe someone something.

Respect is earned when the child has been given life.

I think the answer to you question lies in another question "why do so many kids think their parents owe them everything?". Kids these days are much more lazy and freeloading than they were even 20 years ago. Society has done them an injustice.

Thier parents DO owe them something. The parent chose to have kids, and the kids are providing the service of carrying on their genetic material. Thus, the parents owe them compensation.

They owe them discipline, food, and maybe the occasional gift. Kids these days get way more stuff than they deserve.

They took raised and cared for me when I was young and if necessary we will care for my mom now that she is old. I think the world was a lot better off when this was the norm for families.

Newsflash, makeing a child is not exactly hard, and the kid did not ask to be born. Doing something easy and that your genetics tell you too is not deserving of respect. A parent can earn respect through good parenting, it's not automatic.

Kids deserve everything thier parents can reasonably give. The child is dependent on the parent, and if the parent can provide a good life, they are obliged to do so.

Why should the children be burdened with the parents? They did not choose to be born, why should they have consequences for the parents not planning well enough to be taken care of by others?

Go give birth, feed, raise and develop a child then tell me how easy it is.

I didn't say something, I said everything....nice try. Parents do owe their children something but it is not whay you may think. Parents owe their kids a proper upbringing that teaches them the proper values and work ethic needed to succeed and advance in this world. Unfortunately these days that kind of upbringing would be considered harsh and abusive since the kid does not get everything they want and is actually forced to earn things. They don't owe them playstations and new cars. Parents are failures these days too....it is not just the kids.

That is the stage where the earn respect. The conception stage is not.

Plasma TVs in every bedroom and $50 allowances do not provide a good life.
