Why do some (many?) websites still use/require Salutations?

I keep running into websites that demand some sort of pre-selected salutation before your name when registering for whatever they offer.

Most are just Mr., Miss, Ms. or Mrs., but some include titles like DR. But there is no way to ignore the field or enter anything manually. You have to select something.

Seems archaic.

Perhaps because it's a bit more subtle then just asking for gender? (all I've got)

On the scale of "things that bug me" this isn't even on the radar. ;)

Why use any? Why have the field at all? First, Middle, Last, Suffix (Optional)

Title and Rank are not necessary either unless within that particular environment.

Clearly all internet websites must be contacted... including about a quarter million new ones every day.

I want to go by The Hon Miss. I like the incongruity.

Aren't those honorifics rather than salutations?

I thought a "salutation" was something like "hello there" or "good morning"

I always put my wife down as Frau, just to mess with her.

They are missing mine though, which is AH(asshole)

Maybe they want that info so if they ever have to call you on the phone they can call you "Mr. So and so" rather than using your first name.
