Why do some keys on computer keyboards have raised bars on them?

I have noticed that some keys on keyboards have raised bars, specifically on mine they are on the 'f' and the 'j' keys.

I come to the all knowing collective mind of ATOT for the answer....

They are where your index fingers are when you are using "home row." It allows you to find the right keys each time without ever having to look at the keyboard.

For touch typists. You can easily find the home keys without looking. I use them all the time.

Edit: Doh! Beat me to it!

These are the "secret keys" . By pressing them both simultaneously you send a signal to the planet Zegbob that you are one of their covert alien spies ;)

it makes it easier to get "set up" (especially in the dark) when you type (the correct way, utilizing all 8 finger and 2 thumbs), that is where you set up your index fingers on both hands. the left had index finger goes on the "f" and the right hand index finger goes on the "j". also, most calculators and cellphones have a little bump on the "5".

I guess you just quoted yourself for no apparent reason.

Plus the fact that Bob had a 3 sentence post that was 8 mintues later than other people. That doesn't sound like they posted at the same time. I could see it requiring 8 minutes if he used capital letters, but he didn't...

Some keyboards have keys with raised dots, and you know what people called those.... ;) I would say, but it's vacation-earning material...
