Why do some football quarterbacks lick the tip of their fingers?

Considering where the ball has been and what they're touching on the field it just seems disgusting to me when some football quarterbacks keep licking their fingers. Gross!

watch cricket.. the whole team lick the ball and tries to clean one side of the ball.
Some players use their sweat from their brow and armpits to shine the ball too...

Seeing as how the QB jams his fingers under the center, I guess he just wants to keep them clean.

You'd probably lick a lot of things for $15,000,000 a year.

I think a better question is why do quarterbacks always have to lift up their foot and put it down again while in shotgun before the snap? If it's to fool anyone, it doesn't work because EVERY QB does it.

Ahhh, I've always wondered that too.

I'm sure you do lots of things every day that are much more germy than that.

A QB has some dirt and sweat on his hands. Ooooooooo, scary!

It usually is a visual queue for the wide outs to start any motion.

And the fingers are easy. Soccer goalies used to spit on our hands before they came out with all of these fancy goalie gloves. Makes them sticky.

It's usually to set men in motion.

Isn't the "stomp" to tell the center the QB is ready for the snap? When the QB is under center and does that little kick out with his foot...that's to set the man in motion.

Some players don't care to think about "where the ball has been" and would prefer to have a better grip on the ball.

Others choose to closely analyze where the ball has been and make effeminate comments like "Gross!"

Pick your position.

With all that sweating they be doing they need to replenish the salt back into their body any way they can, even if it means the salt from all the other players :D
But its to put more grip on the ball for they throw it with the finger tips ;)

It's pretty bad for some QB's, they showed Manning on the sidelines licking his fingers on BOTH hands after Tennessee made that 60-yard FG with .06 left, so it's not like he was gonna play another snap anyway.
