Why do some americans feel that childrens education is not their own responsibility?

Chris Rock in Head of State says:

are your children stupid?? that's not your fault.

hmmm, if it's not the parents fault whos fault is it??

schools can only do so much, the biggest difference between kids that do well and don't do well in school is NOT which school they go to but how much time the parents spend with their kids.

it also wierds me out when they say, you can do whatever when your 18 but until then you do what i say, its like "hey now im 18, my parents can't tell me what to do, lets go do hookers and blow!"

i agree and disagree... teachers are paid to teach... parents are there to guide and oversee the development of the child. if the parent doesnt overlook the childs schoolwork (homework, etc) starting at an early age... chances are they wont do well in school at all anyway.

i heard this SOO much when i was 15 or so - "if only i knew then what i know now... i would have dun so much differant" and now that im 25 - i agree 100%

Chris Rock said many things in that video that were bs; his ideas appealed to the lowest common denominator.

i agree, i'm not saying that he actually believed what he said. BUT you hear it all the time, how bad our educational system is in the US and how far back our kids are falling behind . . .

My mother's been an elementary school teacher for 40 years, and we often discuss the changes in American education; it's her opinion, at least, that there are very few actually lazy kids, at least that she's come into contact with. Rather, it's the really lazy ones who make the headlines, and the whiny teachers who get quoted.

Just her $0.02.

it's my belief that our educational system isn't as bad as it's made out to be.

my wife and i chose to move to the US because we felt that the educational system here is better than that of South Korea.

I like the asian parents approach:

You better do good in high school, so you can get into the a good college, so you can do engineering, because social science = working at micky d's, then you find a good paying job, so you can find a wife, and buy a house, so we can move in with you when you are married, and we will live with you until we die.

yeah, that just about sums it up.

Hehe, I chose Economics and that was mildly acceptable; I'm now doing accounting and law school of my own volition, but I know my dad in particular is much more pleased.
