Why do socks come in zip lock bags?

Just back from kohls after re-stocking my sock supply. I'm sitting here looking at three bags of socks all with resealable tops. Two of the brands have gone so far as to advertise that the bag is resealable. WTF? Why would that be important? Am I missing some fundamental of sock ownership here?

It cost...what....pennies more to use a sealable bag for marketing purposes....but it takes more than a few pennies more to actually improve the sock itself. Take your pick.

The socks don't need improving. I want my nickle/6pack back.

some people - not me - but some i know - use socks only once and so the reusable bag idea is for them I'm guessing. Just buy a bag, leave it in their locker in the gym, and that way never have to take any home and they have their own little spcial storage bag for the locker.

People can open the bag, feel the contents, then reseal it. So when you buy your (potentially fondled) socks, you can have more confidence that none just fell out of the bag. Really this is saying "yes, you can feel the material that these are made of and no one will mind". Same concept as toys with a "try me" button sticking out of the packaging.

Of course, some could be stolen. But if someone has reached the point of stealing individual socks...

I've never seen socks in a resealable bag

Then you've never bought Hanes or Fruit of the Loom (or many of their competitors) socks. Socks that are sold in bigger packages (3 pairs or whatever) seem to do this, socks sold in single pairs seem to not do it.

Thats it. I'm going back to Kohls and asking for socks with the "Never Fondled" guarantee.

i seriously would not doubt that several ATOTers do this.

exactly!

although i've been thinking - i bet socks sold in bags are not good enough for most ATOTers. they probably only buy handmade socks made of Malabar Large Spotted Civet fur knitted by Grand Muftis during a full moon.

It's a good question... lol

The bags can't be reused, they're perforated.

Hmm. I dunno.

Looks like the cotton companies haven't run into higher costs from the gas rises.... you'll see new packaging soon

I was pondering it myself last time I bought socks. I thought "Could someone really be washing the socks, folding them, and them storing them in the bag after they've worn them?"

as a serious reply, i have to agree with the person who said it was so you could feel the sock material. I like heavier socks so there's nothing worse than buying a bag of socks and finding out they are thinner than tissue paper.

I can't remember, but isn't there still a strip of plastic you have to pull off in order to open the bag?.....

No. They open (and re-close) just like a Ziploc.

Some people like to wear the socks straight out of the bag, before they're laundered. The bag lets you keep the new ones separate from the laundered socks in your drawer.

Don't ask me why. /shrug

I don't even wear socks from a bag... I wear the obnoxiously colored/patterned ones that come as individual pairs, or are held together by one of those little plastic things that they use to put tags on clothes.

When I become rich, the first thing I'm doing is buying socks to use one time. It's like the first bite from an apple. I've got one of the new pairs on right now and let me tell you, they feel good.
