Why do so many people want Romney if they hate Obama?

Why is Romney so popular if he's so similar to Obama? He still wants the income tax, the IRS, he wants to police the world, he doesn't want to get rid of the Fed, he's not 100% pro-life, he's pro-PATRIOT Act, he would never balance the budget, let alone pay off some of the Federal debt, and he wouldn't make complete abolition of Obamacare a priority.

If someone doesn't like Obama then they should want the polar opposite.

The thing is, most people want someone closer to Obama than to the polar opposite of him. They just don't want Obama.

I'm going to be really pissed if some socialist, fiscally liberal neocon gets the nomination in 2012.

That makes two of us. You know he will, just as McCain and Bush before him. Which sort of makes me root for Obama in 2012 if nothing more than to punish Republicans even more until they learn their lesson.

I don't want Romney and I sure as hell don't want Palin. Unless someone sufficiently conservative runs in 2012 I will not be voting and I sure as hell won't be pulling the Repub lever straight down. Spidey is right that some big changes are afoot on the Repub side of the aisle.

My ideal candidate is a fiscal conservative who will cut down the size and reach of govt. I could care less about social issues -- they should be dropped or de-emphasized entirely from the Repub platform given the state of our economy and country's finances.

Ummm, you just described the vast majority of all Americans.

Seriously, how old are you? From the quality of your posts and your reasoning skills I am guessing no older than 14.

Because he promised them free stuff from the blood, sweat, and tears of others? What's better than free stuff at the expense of other people?

Why do we blame Obama for not delivering on his promises when a combination of total GOP opposition plus a few blue dog democrats have made that delivery impossible for Obama?

But to stick to the thread topic, Romney is classic example of guess wrong epic fail. Because I have long argued that Romney might have won the GOP nomination for POTUS in 2008 if he had run on his semi-decent record as a rational GOP governor in a blue blue state. And instead choose to reinvent himself as the incredible plastic man as a born again Christian NRA member having Cherry pie religious right American cred image all the way. And then Mitt was shocked and stunned to find the religious right picked the genuine article in Huckabee, and then later went Ga Ga over Palin. Leaving ole Mitt odd man out all around.

Three big ones that have no excuse other than arrogance and disrespect for the people:

1) Transparency - Does not require GOP support.
He can ensure that the DEM party leaders putany bills out for people to review 72 hours before voting. Yes, he does not control the chambers; but he needs to explain why he hads not pushed for it.

2) Lobbyists - He controls who is nominated and hired at the executive level.
He filled his WH staff with advisors that come straight from the industry that they were loggying for.

3) Gitmo - This was to be closed per his campaign
While he knew that to do so would be to either transfer prisoners and/or release them; he has done neither.

My only comment EagleKeeper is that you seem to have an inordinate faith in the non existent magic wand our constitution does not issue any President.

But I too am critical of Obama, he needed to hit the ground running harder, has made many mistakes, but he is still a world of a lot better than GWB&co.
