Why Do So Many People Like The Boston Red Sox?

I personally think this is one of the worst teams ever to play baseball, not that baseball is any great game to begin with. Why are there so many geeks/nerds that think this team is the greatest thing since sliced bread? I fail to see what the attraction is.

As for baseball, I must refer to the immortal words of George Carlin.

Baseball is a nineteenth-century pastoral game.

Football is a twentieth-century technological struggle.

Baseball is played on a diamond, in a park. The baseball park!

Football is played on a GRIDIRON, in a STADIUM, sometimes called SOLDIER FIELD or WAR MEMORIAL STADIUM.

Baseball begins in the spring, the season of new life.

Football begins in the fall, when everything is dying.

In football you wear a helmet

In baseball you wear a cap.

Football is concerned with downs. "What down is it?

Baseball is concerned with ups. "Who's up? Are you up? I'm not up! He's up!"

In football you receive a penalty.

In baseball you make an error.

In football the specialist comes in to kick.

In baseball the specialist comes in to relieve somebody.

Football has hitting, clipping, spearing, piling on, personal fouls, late hitting, and unnecessary roughness.

Baseball has the sacrifice.

Football is played in any kind of weather: Rain, snow, sleet, hail, fog...can't see the game, don't know if there is a game going on; mud on the field...can't read the uniforms, can't read the yard markers, the struggle will continue!

In baseball if it rains, we don't go out to play. "I can't go out! It's raining out!"

Baseball has the seventh-inning stretch.

Football has the two-minute warning

Baseball has no time limit: "We don't know when it's gonna end!"

Football is rigidly timed, and it will end "even if we have to go to sudden death."

In baseball, during the game, in the stands, there's kind of a picnic feeling. Emotions may run high or low, but there's not that much unpleasantness.

In football, during the game in the stands, you can be sure that at least twenty-seven times you were perfectly capable of taking the life of a fellow human being

And finally, the objectives of the two games are completely different:

In football, the object is for the quarterback, otherwise known as the field general, to be on target with his aerial assault, riddling the defense by hitting his receivers with deadly accuracy in spite of the blitz, even if he has to use the shotgun. With short bullet passes and long bombs, he marches his troops into enemy territory, balancing this aerial assault with a sustained ground attack that punches holes in the forward wall of the enemy's defensive line.

In baseball the object is to go home! And to be safe! "I hope I'll be safe at home!"

-George Carlin

They are the antithesis of the NY Yankees. Many a soul has been drawn to be a jedi in the struggle against the evil empire. Many more will die, but in the end it will be worth it!

Compared to the Yankees, they are the underdogs. There is something about underdog teams that make them fan favorites.

Actually, Vegas picked Bosox to win it all this year, so no, not underdogs... Do a search in these threads for it.

The more they suck, the more New England'ers seem to love their local teams for their past victories. ie: The '69 Mets and the classic Bean-eating Sox in particular, but even the Phillies and Orioles to a lesser extent.

Myself, on the other hand... I've seen the Braves lose in the playoffs enough that I just don't care anymore.

Go back to reading your LOTR trilogy, and make sure you clean and put some fresh tape on your glasses.

Let's test your theory: Go to any bar/night club/dance club. I'll say I'm a Red Sox/Baseball fan, and you say you're a LOTR/Tolkien fan. We'll see how many women you get. I'm guessing..........NONE!

So saying you're a Red Sox fan gets you women? Strange. Usually when people make such a claim, those in the surrounding area laugh and point.

Yes, because it is a proven fact that women hate the LOTR trilogy, any guy who mentions he likes LOTR to a woman would not get said women. Hey, dude, ease up on your jock strap, i think its making you cranky.

EDIT: btw, put your penis away. we dont care how many women you get. that just makes you a man whore.

You know what's sad is that if the A's had 1/2 or even 1/3rd the money that some of these teams like the Yankees and the Red Sox have they would have won a World Series by now. Instead they just grow these studs and then have to let them go. Imagine Giambi and Tejada with the group they have this year. And say what you want about the A's, they are always competitive, but in my mind they choke in the playoffs b/c they don't have any proven studs and you need 1 or 2 offensive clutch players (not role players) to close out the series. Here's hoping for the A's in 2004!!!

Red Sox and Yanks suck btw. Give me A's for AL and I'll take the Chubs for the NL.
