Why do so many good bands come from Scandinavia?

Especially Metal bands seem to come mostly from Scandinavia. Examples are Dimmu Borgir, Theatre of Tragedy, Therion (all from Norway), Nightwish (Finland), Tristania, Vintersorg, Opeth etc.
And close to Scandinavia: EverEve (Germany).

Coincedence, or is there a reason for this?

I've always wondered about this myself but have never come up with a good reason for it. I really enjoy my metal and appreciate all types of music but sometimes you just have to yearn for the power that great metal has.

It's obvious that you've never really listened to Metal.

I suggest listening to Nightwish (Sacrament of Wilderness, She is my Sin, The Kinslayer, Sleeping Sun, Deep Silent Complete, Wishmaster, Bare Grace Misery, Walkingin the Air, Dead Boy's Poem, Passion and the Opera, Swanheart, Stargazers).
