Why do so many christian religions make up their own rules?

I've always found it strange how every christian religion has their own unique set of rules despite the fact they're supposed to be following the bible. For example some religions won't allow:

- their priests to marry
- the male members to wear beards
- drinking of any alcohol
- the listening of secular music (non-christian)

Then some religions insist their members:

- worship idols
- engage in preaching
- wear certain types of clothing
- confess to priests

You would think that all christian religions would have the same set of beliefs since they all use the bible as a basis but there are so many differences that its mind boggling. I'm not knocking any particular religion but I just think its strange that they all make up rules to fit their agenda.

South Park already did a good job of covering this tonight. Well, the episode centered itself around the catholics, but you could apply it to other denomiations of christianity if you feel so inclind ;)

That would be an understatement. You know how many different types of Islam there are?

sure...

there are 2...sunni and shi'ite

the sunni is the "correct" muslim, where as the shi'ite believe it is the prophet Mohamad's COUSIN who should have been the prophet (had the qoran revealed to him) and what not. in my own personal opinion, that would mean that they are saying that GOD made a mistake, which makes them WRONG!

The book has not changed, the wording is exactly the same, but the people have changed, and with them the interpretation. The only difference with the Christian world in that sense is that several of the Christian groups did change the contents of the Bible to suit their interpretations (Thou shalt not kill -> murder).

Effects are the same basically, no matter whether you say a book say something because that is what you think it does, or if you rewrite it to suit your thoughts.

Mostly due to scriptural interpertation. Just like the constitution, people interpert the Bible differently.

Skyclad1uhm1 - (Thou shalt not kill -> murder).

Thou shalt not murder has always been the correct form. I don't know what groups/ changes you are talking about. I use the KJV Bible. It has been the same for hundreds of years.

Jesus turning water into wine always made me wonder about the baptists (and such) who say alcohol is eeeevvviiilll.

i think killing in self defense (or even retaliation as a form of justice) has always been allowed in every religion (except budhism?). The thing that makes you hardcore is if you dont take that next level of justice in your own hands and just let god deal with it after said persons death :)

Ding ding ding!

We have a winner!

What is religion if NOT a set of rules that have been made up and accepted by the followers to be 'true'?

It is a set of rules that have been passed to us by GOD through PROPHETS and accepted by the followers to be "true"!

Does God condone killing of innocents, or is that always seen as murder? If a Christian soldier throws a bomb just next to the wanted target and kills one or more innocent civilians, will he be going to hell for certain? After all, he knew that risk existed and still decided to take it.

And whether it's kill or murder is a matter of interpretation too. It's what you want it to be what you will believe to be true, you cannot be certain that is what God meant.

OK, except I'll put quotation marks around "GOD" and "PROPHETS" since those terms/concepts are subjective and highly influenced by what part of the world you were born and raised in.

One man's prophet is another man's blasphemer... :p

You don't go to Hell for murder. If you STUDY the Scripture, the meanings become more and more clear.

Killing someone does not condemm you to hell, God created the ten commandments for us to live by, no person has ever lived by the ten commandments except for Jesus. We are all sinners because we are all decendants of Adam and Eve. In Gods eyes the level of the sin does not matter, if you "covert your neighbors wife" or you "Kill" someone both sins will keep you out of Heaven. What determines your place in eternity is your trust in Jesus dying for your sins on the cross. Christians interput the bible differently just like Muslims do. Although I do think Catholics have it all wrong.
